Google and QR Codes

Not sure what’s going on with Google and QR Codes, but Gawker Media is reporting that…

“Google is working with QVC on a REVOLUTIONARY advanced type of bar code that can be scanned with a mobile phone….

Google has already seen results from a recent test campaign conducted in three markets with jewelry retailer Blue Nile. Each ad contained a QR code and a response tag, and was tested against the same ads without the tags. The code-enhanced ads ended up driving 6.5 times more revenue than the ads without.”

Crazy results! I would love to see if a QR Code banner would work online.

Bango has been playing with QR codes for about 6 years now.

Have a look at http://mobilesoapbox.wordpress.com/2007/03/06/bar-codes-and-other-camera-stuff/ for some thoughts about a year ago.

We also now use QR as a response mechanism to get PC users to go to or “bookmark” mobile sites on their mobiles: http://www.bango.com/button - initial use was very low, but its climbing slowly.

The big change is that mobile operators have moved over the last year from a “walled garden” to a more open model (except a few …)

Look forward to the site launch!

I think it’s interesting that Google is now looking to push QR codes as a marketing mechanism. Agree that QR codes are hardly revolutionary, but if it takes a big name like Google to make it mainstream then so be it.

Just looked at that Bango Button Ray - is it more of a “go to my mobile site” link for my current website or is it meant to be a plug and play “buy” button for mobile media?

I thought Bango did wap billing, but I noticed you also do mobile analytics (http://bango.com/analytics). Does that mean I can use your QR codes and have you track their success?

You might want to check out http://www.tigtags.com if you are interested in QR analytics.
